1992 Wrestling Team
Coach Matthew was tasked with rebuilding a wrestling program in a hurry. With injuries and transfers out, he was in a tough situation. The Eagles suddenly came to life after a challenging start, winning eight of their final nine matches. Led by team captains, Dan Plefka and Andrew Whipple, the team continued their streak by capturing their 12th straight South Jersey Group A title with a 41-14 victory over Holy Cross.
Paul VI's next battle would be with the defending state Group A champion Bergen Catholic at Bergen for the state title. Bergen had defeated Paul VI the previous year with a score of 32-18. Paul VI led by just 24-18 after the 140-pound bout, but went unbeaten through the last six weight classes, including pins by Alex Grassia (171) and heavyweight Pat Henderson, and major decisions by Drew Whipple (145) and Joe Micela (189). The team avenged their loss to Bergen Catholic by beating the host, 49-20, making them the NJSIAA State Parochial Group A Championship Team.
The Eagles ended the season with a final record of 16-4-1, and PVI was ranked seventh in the Courier Post South Jersey Top Ten.
