Michael Bush, '71
As a young boy, Mike always enjoyed playing sports. Athletic ability came naturally to him; however, it was his competitiveness, a sense of team, and building trust that fueled his determination to be the best version of himself. Drawing inspiration from his father, who was a first sergeant in the Army during World War II and received the Bronze Star Medal, Mike learned discipline for self-improvement and empathy for his fellow man. He was able to translate those lessons onto the field and grow as an athlete and an individual.
Mike was a member of the 1971 State Championship Football Team. He was selected to the All-Parochial first team in his senior year with 13 touchdowns, 8 two-point conversions, and 862 rushing yards. During his career at Paul VI, Mike accounted for 29 touchdowns and 19 extra points, being rated as one of the best running backs in South Jersey. He was also a member of the Track Team where he earned 28 gold and silver medals from 1968 through 1971. Mike attended the University of Southern Mississippi, where he played football as a running back.
After college, Mike became a corrections officer and worked for 23 years. He would like to share this athletic Hall of Fame achievement award with his son, Michael. He also wore number 43 and played as a running back. We know he is looking down and sharing this wonderful honor with his dad tonight.
